Paul Gimbel (1941-2022)

Paul Gimbel always positive. A member of the Swaythling Club International, Paul Gimbel passed away on Sunday 18th September; he was 81 years old. At the Stockholm 1957 World Championships, he reached last 32 of the men’s singles event; the year in which at the Netherlands national championships he won both junior and senior titles. Additional to table tennis he was one of the first rock and roll artists in the Netherlands; his recording “Clap your hands and twist” can be found on YouTube. At the Summit

Swiss Swaythling Club Meets

Aat the beginning we met in the popular museum "Swiss Museum of Transport", then followed the protocol part of the General Meeting. Barnsley Pays Tribute to Alan Hydes

Recently, Barnsley Heritage mounted a plaque on the wall of the local YMCA in recognition of Alan Hydes, Swaythling Club mermber, starting his career in the town, later being a member of the England team that visited China immediately following the conclusion of the Nagoya 1971 World Championships. 34 Alan Hydes

Potential New Members in Lima

Present at the Pan American Veteran Championships being staged in the Peruvian capital city of Lima from Monday 21st to Saturday 26th November is Claude Bergeret, President of the Swaythling Club International. The occasion affords the opportunity to introduce new players to the Swaythling Club International, Colombia’s Carlos Orlando Rodriguez Lesmes and Jairo Gonzales showed an interest. Also, one wonders could there be potential new members from Peru? Olympians Magali Montes (Barcelona 1992), Eliana Gonzalez del Riego (Barcelona 1992 & Atlanta 1996), Milagritos Gorriti (Atlanta 1996) and Marisol Espineira (Athens 2004) all meet the membership criteria. Jacques Hélaine (1941-2022)

President of the French Table Tennis Federation from April to December 2011, Jacques Hélaine passed away on Wednesday 19th October; he was 81 years old. A valued member of the Swaythling Club International, former international, he competed in both World and European Championships; domestically, he was the men’s singles runner up at the French National Championships in both 1964 and 1971,  the men’s doubles winner partnering Vincent Purkart in 1964, 1965 and 1969 as well as alongside Jacques Gambier in 1966. Playing days over, he assumed a coaching role, in addition to undertaking administrative duties. He became President of the Amiens club and Vice-President of the Picardy League, before in 1980 becoming the first high-level sportsman to be elected within the management committee

Irena Bosa-Mikocziova (1945-2022)

Irena Bosa-Mikocziova passed away on Sunday 18th September, she was 77 years old. Born on Friday 19th January 1945 in Vinohrady nad Vahom, Galanta District, located in south-west Slovakia, she was 77 years old. Irena started to play table tennis when 10 years old at Dynamo Spoj Bratislava; in 1961 when 16 years of age she moved to Lokomotiva Raca, later known as Lokomotiva Bratislava. She played in the top national league, becoming an established member of the Czechoslovakian national team. At the 1961 European Youth Championships in Bad Blankenburg, at the time only junior events staged, partnering Marta Luzova she won girls’ team bronze, before partnering Vilim Polakovic to mixed doubles gold. Alan Hydes Promoting Good Relations

A member of the England team that visited China following the 1971 World Championships in Nagoya, Alan Hydes, member of the Swaythling Club International, continues to promote good relations. Using modern day technology, a Zoom call with the Chinese Embassy in London is planned for Tuesday 27th September.
