“Our Club is unique in the history of sport. Friendship and respect is our mutual bond”.
These were the opening words of the second verse of a song which rhymed to the tune of the German war song, “Lily Marlene”.
The three-verse lyrics were written by the late Suzy Barna and, after a mass choir of 80 or more voices of members and friends, who sang the song with gusto and ease, at the Leeds Biennial Meeting on Friday 1st April,1977, it was adjudged “The Swaythling Club Song”.
The three verses went as follows:
“Here we meet again in harmony and love,
Guests and fellow members of The Swaythling Club, We meet again, our aim is thus,
To see old friends,
And make new ones,
And always we remember
Our friends in Swaythling Club
Our Club in unique in history of sport, Friendship and respect is our mutual bond, We play the game and hope to win
And if we lose
We try again
And always we remember
Our friends in Swaythling Club
As we sit together smiling and gay,
Let’s remember those who are so far away, And those we loved, admired and lost,
We drink to them
They are with us
And always we remember
Our friends in Swaythling Club
