It is with great sadness that the passing of Peter Bakker is announced.
He died on Tuesday 12th April; he was 71 years old.

Born in Rotterdam, he spent his working life principally in the area of Information Technology being employed as a civil servant in the national government’s financial department. He retired in April 2015.

In retirement years, he focused his attentions on writing and music, being a tour guide for the celebrated Feyenoord Football Club.

Active in the table tennis world, first as a player then in a host of administrative posts; he was the chair of his local club, later becoming a Council member of the Netherlands Table Tennis Association.

Most notably in 2019 he was elected President of the International Veterans Table Tennis Society.

Petra Sörling, ITTF President, paid her own personal tribute:

“He was a personal friend to very many of us, especially for me. He fulfilled many functions within our sport. Always his very friendly manner was appreciated. He was the perfect host in the VIP area at World Championships. In his role as President of the Veterans Society he was very active and hard working.” Petra Sörling

Likewise, Canada’s Bruce Burton, former ITTF Executive Committee Member shared precious memories.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Bakker. Upon meeting him for the first time at the 2011 World Championships in Rotterdam, I was very impressed with his ability to greet by name so many of us whom he had not met before. His attention to detail, and the fact that he had clearly poured over the ITTF website, allowed him to do that. He brought this level of professionalism to a number of additional championships in a charming and gentle way. He raised the approach to hospitality services in a way that endeared him to all of us. His passion for the sport and for meeting people will long be remembered. He was a true friend from 2011 onward. To the family I offer my sincerest condolences.” Bruce Burton

The Swaythling Club International alongside the International Table Tennis Federation extends sincere condolences.
