Gold medallist in the cadet boys’ singles event at the 13th European Youth Championships staged in Teesside, England in August 1970, in those days for players under 14 years of age, on Wednesday 29th June, Simon Heaps added to that success at the Stag 2022 European Veteran Championships in Rimini.

The Englishman won men’s singles para class 1-5, an event for wheelchair players.

In the later rounds he ended Italian hopes. At the semi-final stage he beat Francesco Baggio (9-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-5), prior to securing the title at the expense of Davide Scazzieri (11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 11-7).

Earlier, Davide Scazzieri had accounted for compatriot, Andrea Galli (11-9, 11-5, 11-2) to reserve his place in the final.

Success for England, in men’s singles para class 6-10 for standing players, it was gold for Germany.
