Held for the first time in virtual mode necessitated by the current pandemic, at the 2020 ITTF Annual General Meeting, the South African city of Durban gained the vote to host the 2023 World Championships Finals.

It is only the second time since the World Championships were held in 1926 in London that an African nation will have staged the tournament; the one other occasion being in 1939 when the Egyptian capital city of Cairo played host.

Durban gained 90 votes, as opposed the one further contender the German city of Düsseldorf which secured 39 votes.
